Kartoo.com: A Different Kind of Search Engine. In late April of 2002, KartOO SA launched Kartoo.com, a visual meta - search engine.. Kartoo is a different kind of search engine. Like Map.net, Kartoo displays query results and presents them in a visual way. Unlike Map.net, Kartoo queries multiple search engines, and uses the popular Flash plug-in to display the results. The result of your query is displayed with an interactive map, using balls to designate major sites that cover your query term. The size of each ball shows how relevant and popular each site is. These nodes are linked together by dynamic "semantic links" labeled with keywords. These connections help visualize the relationships between items. Clicking on the link allows you to add or subtract the theme to your initial request, and Kartoo translates the syntax depending on which search engines are activated.

Rollover a node, and a description pops up. Rollover a connection and you can add or subtract that term, refining your query. More advanced users can further refine their searches with the advanced search interface (URL, near, domain, images). The interface is intuitive, and it makes navigating through the space of your query topic easy, speeding up your searches. Maps can be stored locally and forwarded.

It's more free form than Map.net, which is based on AOL Time Warner's Open Directory Project. You get the feeling that you are navigating through Web space, not restricted to a human- edited list of sites. The downside of course it the lack of an overall taxonomy. It's on the fly, with "semantic links" and related categories and topics. Submit to KartOO on the lower right hand corner of the site.
